Evaluation of traffic safety at un-signalized intersections using microsimulation: a utilization of proximal safety indicators

چکیده
In many cases crashes at intersections account for over 50% of all urban road crashes. The need to reduce these crashes has fostered considerable research on the development and evaluation of traffic safety at intersections. This paper introduces a micro-level behavioral approach for estimating the crash potential at unsignalized intersections for different traffic conditions. To this end, proximal safety indicators which represent the temporal and spatial proximity characteristics of unsafe interactions and near-accidents are explored and a practical implementation of post-encroachment time (PET) is carried out in the safety evaluation process. Simulation results demonstrate the sensitivity of PET to changes in the speed limit on roads and show that it can be used to carry out safety evaluations of uncontrolled intersections. More generally, the ability of microsimulation to evaluate safety effects of policy measures like speed limit is

متن کاملImpact of Optimally Minimizing Delay Times on Safety at Signalized Intersections in Urban Areas, Case Study: The City of Virginia Beach
Optimally minimizing delay times at signalized intersections can significantly improve both traffic flow and safety. However, most traffic flow optimizing tools do not measure the effect on safety. This study uses nonlinear programming (NLP) algorithms to optimally minimize delay times and employs both Safety performance functions (SPFs) and empirical Bayes (EB) before-after methodology to meas...
متن کاملModeling Multiple–Vehicle Property Damage Collisions in Urban Signalized Intersections
Development of disaggregate models for estimating different property damage collision type frequencies in urban intersections has rarely been studied, particularly in Iran. It seems very little research work being implemented for studying the effect factors on collision type frequency at intersections. The main objective of this paper is to develop suitable statistical models to predict types o...
متن کاملEstimating the Safety Benefits of Red Light Cameras at Signalized Intersections in Urban Areas Case Study: The City of Virginia Beach
The Highway Safety Manual [HSM, 2010] recommends safety evaluations be performed before implementing any roadway treatment to predict the expected safety consequences. Safety consequences can be measured using crash prediction models, Crash Modification Factor (CMFs), or both. This paper develops a CMF to show the expected impact of red-light cameras (RLCs) on safety at signalized intersections...
